Outgoing Commander, Colonel Ronald Scheitzach, relinquished command of the Iowa Wing to Lt Col Michael Mouw. Col Scheitzach’s five year tenure was served with honor and distinction. With nearly 300 members in Iowa Wing, Col Scheitzach brought the importance of CAP’s three missions and the Core Values to the forefront of his command. “People forget how fast you did a job, but they remember how well you did it,” reflects Col Sheila Waldorf, member of Col Scheitzach’s Executive Committee, and close friend, “Colonel Ron Scheitzach will be remembered for doing his job well!”

“I know that the next four years will bring us all continued success and opportunities,” stated Col Mouw, “we will build on what Col Scheitzach and you all have achieved.”

The Change of Command Ceremony opened with the cadet color guard from the Des Moines Metro Cadet Squadron: C/SrA Justin Cox, C/SrA Aaron Cox, C/SrA Matthew Cox and C/SSgt Derrick Doremus.

Numerous dignitaries were on hand for the ceremony.  North Central Region was represented by Col Bob Todd, North Central Region Commander. Col Robert “Otto” Wachholtz, USAF Ret., CAP/USAF Liaison Region Assistant Director Operations (LR ADO).

From the Great Lakes Region, Chief Master Sergeant Robert Dandridge, Illinois Wing Command Chief and Senior Enlisted Advisor. Lt Col Paul Hertel, Illinois Wing Legislative Squadron Commander. Maj Carol Hertel, Scott Composite Squadron Commander, Illinois Wing.

Iowa Guard members included Brigadier General J. Derek Hill, Assistant Adjutant General- Iowa National Guard and Chief Master Sergeant Ed Schellhase- Iowa Air National Guard State Command Chief.

CMSgt Dandridge had the honor of passing the ceremonial banner from Col Scheitzach to Lt Col Mouw, signifying that the command has changed hands.

Originally from Iowa, Col Mouw joined CAP in 1991 while on active duty with the Air Force. Wherever his Air Force career took him, he actively served in a local squadron. Col Mouw has had opportunity to share his leadership and mentoring experience at squadron, group and wing levels in Texas, South Dakota, Iowa, and Illinois Wings. When he was transferred back to Iowa in 2012, he accepted the invitation to perform the duties as Vice Commander for the Iowa Wing.

Following the Change of Command Ceremony, Lt Col Mouw was promoted to Colonel, becoming the 27th Commander of Iowa Wing.

The 2012 Iowa Wing Conference was held October 12-14, 2012 at Camp Dodge in Johnston, IA.  The weekend, which featured 24 learning lab sessions, Drug Demand Reduction (DDR) activities, a Cadet Advisory Council (CAC) meeting and awards banquet, was attended by roughly 100 members from Iowa and surrounding wings including non-CAP family members and other special guests.

The event kicked off on Friday evening with an informal social gathering and DDR activity hosted by the Iowa Wing DDR Officer Capt Jan Lewandowski and North Central Region (NCR) DDR Officer Lt Col Bonnie Braun.  Educational and information materials were on hand for members to look through with a special emphasis on Red Ribbon Week, and cadets were encouraged to participate in creating an anti-drug themed diorama which was then judged the following morning by Iowa Wing Commander Col Ron Scheitzach and NCR Commander Col Robert Todd.  Four awards were handed out: 1st Place – C/2d Lt Jacob Lewandowski, 2nd Place – C/MSgt Luke Lewandowski, 3rd Place – C/CMSgt Austin Lightner and Honorable Mention – Anna Lewandowski.

The general assembly led off Saturday’s events highlighting the state of the Iowa Wing and featured three special guests of the weekend; NCR Commander Col Robert Todd, North Central Liaison Commander Lt Col Paul Peterson and retired Air Force Chief Master Sergeant (CMSgt) Robert Dandridge as well as each of the nine Iowa Wing Squadron Commanders, or their representatives, who gave a short message on the state of their squadrons.  To cap off the morning assembly, a few special awards were presented to deserving members and Cadet Luke Hohenberger was presented his promotion to the rank of Cadet Chief Master Sergeant by Col Scheitzach and CMSgt Dandridge.

Iowa Prepares for an Emergency

JOHNSTON, IA – The Cadet Advisory Council (CAC of the Iowa Wing Civil Air Patrol (CAP) has spent the last several months leading the way in planning and organizing a weekend long Urban Direction Finding training event which took place April 27-29, 2012, at Camp Dodge in Johnston, Iowa.

According to Col Ron Scheitzach, Iowa Wing Commander, this training weekend was the only activity in recollection to be planned by both senior members and cadets.

The CAC originally presented the idea of a weekend event to Col Scheitzach as a leadership activity, and when it transformed into an Emergency Services weekend, the CAC picked up the ball in the coordination by arranging to provide cadet instructors, plan the menu for the participants, and determine the training needs of the cadets in the Iowa Wing. The end result was a weekend packed full of fun and education.

Nearly 80 dedicated CAP cadets and senior members traveled from across Iowa, and some from Wisconsin, to participate in training that would prepare them to be able to respond to an emergency. Upon their Friday night arrival, cadets and seniors reacquainted with old friends from around the state and met new members during sign-in as they prepared and relaxed before training the next day.

JOHNSTON, IA – A total of 8 members from the Iowa Wing of the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) participated in the Training Leader of Cadets (TLC) course held from 31 March-1 April, at Camp Dodge, in Johnston, Iowa. TLC Director, 1st Lt Jan Lewandowski organized the annually required course for 2012.

With a smaller class size, the students had the opportunity to engage in more discussion on the topics of the course.  “Sessions regularly went over time with discussions,” stated Capt Jason Erickson, IA-003 Squadron Commander and TLC student, “so we all had the chance to learn from others experiences.”

Students attending the TLC have a deeper understanding of the many benefits of the Cadet Program. Topics included Adolescent Development, Cadet Advancement, and Mentoring. The squadrons represented at this year’s TLC, shared their unique experiences in all areas of Cadet Programs.

“This is an important course that senior members working with cadets should have,” stated Col Ron Scheitzach, Iowa Wing Commander, “and I am glad to be a part of this training.”

Graduates of the Iowa Wing’s 2012 TLC were Capt Paul Klees, 1st Lt Michelle Klees, Capt Jason Erickson, and Capt Jessa Erickson.  Instructors included Col Ron Scheitzach, Maj Jon Sawyer, Capt Cindi Wachholz and 1st Lt Jan Lewandowski.
