SAREX Dates Announced

leave a comment »

After much anticipation, two Search and Rescue Exercise (SAREX) training dates have been announced!

The first exercise will take place on Saturday April 23rd at Dubuque and Ankeny.  The reason for the split-location decision is to potentially increase participation amongst squadrons that are spread across the state from the Missouri to the Mississippi Rivers and to decrease member fatigue from long trips made to and from the events.  The second exercise, which will be the USAF Evaluated SAREX, will take place on Saturday June 25th again at Dubuque and Ankeny.

Both events can be found on the Wing calendar and more information will be provided as it becomes available.

For senior members who have completed their Level I Foundation requirements, the Iowa Wing provides several training opportunities by hosting a Squadron Leadership Course (SLS), Corporate Learning Corse (CLC), Unit Commanders Course (UCC), and beginning this year, a Training Leaders of Cadets course (TLC). These 2-day courses not only fulfill requirements for progressing through the Senior Member PD Program, but equip members with skills that are useful not only in CAP but also in their work and communities. The 2011 Schedule of PD training (below) is also on the Iowa Wing Website calendar http://www.iawgcap.com/

UCC 21-22 May 2011 – Director: 1Lt Jessa Brace
SLS 9-10 July 2011
TLC 27-28 Aug 2011 – Director: Capt Brian Mishmash
CLC 8-9 Oct 2011

Here you will find our first monthly Professional Development communication – The PD Connection. Many thanks goes to Iowa Professional Development Director, Col Joe Casler, and Assistant IG, Col Sheila Waldorf, for their input and encouragement in developing this publication. A goal of the PD Connection is to be an avenue in which the Wing PD team can engage with the senior members via the Iowa Wing website and email to encourage continued progress in their PD within CAP and answer any questions.

Classroom Training Helps Prepare CAP Members to Search the Skies

DES MOINES, IA. — Members of three Civil Air Patrol squadrons from central and western Iowa participated in classroom training conducted at Exec 1 Aviation in Ankeny, IA during the first weekend of March to help increase the number of qualified mission scanners to assist in search and rescue activities.

In all, nine Civil Air Patrol cadets and officers attended the training event and received mission scanner training. Although the members still need to practice their scanning techniques from the air, they are but a small step away from participating on an aircrew during actual missions.

Captain Kim Kirschman of the 002nd Des Moines Senior Squadron conducted a majority of the training, with assistance from Capt Pam Lehman.

Two search and rescue exercises (SAREXs) have been planned during 2011’s summer months which will provide additional training for members both on the ground and in the air.  To become fully certified as a mission scanner, members must complete classroom training as well as at least two exercise participations which includes time spent up in the air in one Iowa Wing’s five Cessna aircraft. The purpose of the mission scanner role is to be the “eyes in the skies” for the ground team(s) searching on the terrain below.  Ground and air crews work in tandem with each to provide the most effective search results possible when called upon.

Due to CAP members being spread across the state, a second mission scanner training class was being held the same weekend over in eastern Iowa.  Members at that class participated in the same training as those in Ankeny and will lead to the wing increasing its number of qualified air crews in the future.
