Safety Officer of the Year

2014 Annual Award Winners

Safety Officer of the Year
Major George A. Cobley, Iowa Wing
Maj Cobley has a lengthy history of experience as a Safety Officer —for the North Central Region, the Iowa Wing, the Cedar Rapids Senior Squadron and, most recently, the Cedar Rapids Composite Squadron. He reaches out to members with a monthly e-brief, which he compiles by hand to make sure it is relevant to the time of year and to its readers. He trained the Squadron’s first Cadet Safety Officer, helped train his replacement and completed all safety surveys in a timely manner. He has paid particular attention to safety standards for Squadron pilots, ensuring hangars are striped and even hanging a ball from the hangar ceiling to encourage pilots to look up while moving the plane. His skills as a Safety Officer and Check Pilot have made him a critical team member for the Squadron’s success.

Dubuque Area Family STEM Festival

April 12 2014

Dubuque IA

Families from school districts throughout Northeast Iowa will be making their way to Dubuque on Saturday, April 12, to drive robots, conduct science experiments, visit a star lab and explore 3D modeling at the second annual Dubuque Area Family STEM Festival.   The festival is a free event that will take place at the Grand River Center in Dubuque from 10AM to 2PM.  Third through 8th grade students receive unique opportunity to explore the wonders of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) through hands-on experiments and activities, though all are welcome. The 60+ exhibitors schedule to attend include University of Dubuque, Loras College, Clarke University, NICC, University of Northern Iowa (UNI), Iowa State University, University of Iowa as well as many other Iowa STEM related organizations.

University of Northern Iowa website

In 2013-2014, Iowa Legislature awarded $523,978 of funding to each of Iowa’s six STEM hubs for implementing STEM scale-up programs.  Nine programs were offered to Northeast Iowa’s prek-12 schools (public and private) and non-profit organizations.  Each program offered a unique blend of curriculum, materials, professional development and/or mentoring to engage students, educators and local communities.

This was our second appearance at this event. My objective was to reach out to educators and show them the benefits and materials available to an educator for becoming a Civil Air Patrol Aerospace Education Member (AEM). Our display included the educational material the educator would receive for signing up as an AEM. I also had on display three of our STEM Kits; Astronomy, Robotics, and Rockets.

Lt Colonel Bill Mausser and 1st Lt Jean Napp was also in attendance. 1st Lt Napp is an amateur astronomer. She brought some of her displays of space as well as equipment to show how to view the heavens.

Susan Mallet from the NHQ AE department provided us with great materials for this event. I received 500 Aero Props and 500 balsa flyers to hand out to the children as well as a typical AE lesson plans for children and parents to take with them. While Lt Col Mausser and 1st Lt Napp distributed the handouts I spoke with public, private and home school educators about the benefits and materials available to them as an AEM. NHQ also offered a 50% off the normal enrollment fee if they enrolled as an AEM using the special application specifically for this event. National also loaned us a portable CAP Cadet display to help to get us recognized. Susan Mallet

There are other STEM festivals in the NE Iowa Region. I have selected this one because there is also a local CAP unit in Dubuque; 13043. This also turned out to be an excellent recruiting tool for the local unit.

The event lasted 4 hours. We distributed over 800 pieces of the aero prop and balsa flyer. I handed out about 75 AEM applications. I greatly appreciated their support of Lt Col Mausser and 1st Lt Napp in our booth and their interaction with members from the community.

Many were present at the ‘Remembering Our Fallen Iowans’ Memorial Ceremony on Saturday, April 19, 2014, located at the Crossroads Mall in Fort Dodge, Iowa. Among those speaking at the event were Senator Daryl Beall, Representative Helen Miller, and other local members of the community. ‘Remembering Our Fallen’ is a touring photo display with the intention of keeping in peoples’ minds those military personnel by whom the ultimate sacrifice was given. Printed across the display are the names and photographs of men and women who served and died in both the war in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The event was solemnly begun by the NCR-IA-007 Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol’s Color Guard presenting the colors. The color guard is made up of Civil Air Patrol cadets: C/2d Lt Luke Lewandowski, C/1st Lt Isaac Wachholz, C/1st Lt Jacob Lewandowski, and C/SrA Austin Hermanson.

Capt Jessa Erickson
Public Affairs Officer
Iowa Wing

The 2012 Iowa Wing Conference was held October 12-14, 2012 at Camp Dodge in Johnston, IA.  The weekend, which featured 24 learning lab sessions, Drug Demand Reduction (DDR) activities, a Cadet Advisory Council (CAC) meeting and awards banquet, was attended by roughly 100 members from Iowa and surrounding wings including non-CAP family members and other special guests.

The event kicked off on Friday evening with an informal social gathering and DDR activity hosted by the Iowa Wing DDR Officer Capt Jan Lewandowski and North Central Region (NCR) DDR Officer Lt Col Bonnie Braun.  Educational and information materials were on hand for members to look through with a special emphasis on Red Ribbon Week, and cadets were encouraged to participate in creating an anti-drug themed diorama which was then judged the following morning by Iowa Wing Commander Col Ron Scheitzach and NCR Commander Col Robert Todd.  Four awards were handed out: 1st Place – C/2d Lt Jacob Lewandowski, 2nd Place – C/MSgt Luke Lewandowski, 3rd Place – C/CMSgt Austin Lightner and Honorable Mention – Anna Lewandowski.

The general assembly led off Saturday’s events highlighting the state of the Iowa Wing and featured three special guests of the weekend; NCR Commander Col Robert Todd, North Central Liaison Commander Lt Col Paul Peterson and retired Air Force Chief Master Sergeant (CMSgt) Robert Dandridge as well as each of the nine Iowa Wing Squadron Commanders, or their representatives, who gave a short message on the state of their squadrons.  To cap off the morning assembly, a few special awards were presented to deserving members and Cadet Luke Hohenberger was presented his promotion to the rank of Cadet Chief Master Sergeant by Col Scheitzach and CMSgt Dandridge.
