And last but not least, this week also marks the 2012 Colorado Encampment.  Unfortunately due to the spreading wildfires nearby, we’ve gotten word that they have been evacuated as a precaution and that all encampment participants have been sent home.  1 Iowa cadet was participating at this event as a flight commander and we do know that he is safe and sound and awaiting his flight home later this week.

OHIO — Cadets representing the Southeast Region captured the color guard crown and the Southwest Region team took the drill team title in the National Cadet Competition, held Wednesday through Saturday at Wright State University in Dayton.

Rounding out the top three in the color guard competition were the Pacific Coast Region and the Northeast Region.

In the drill team competition, the Great Lakes Region entry placed second and the Southeast Region representative finished third.

The Southeast Region color guard team, hailing from the Puerto Rico Wing’s Dr. Casareo Roa-Nieves Cadet Squadron, finished first in five phases of the color guard competition – standard drill, indoor practical, outdoor practical, in-ranks inspection and mile run – and rounded out its championship performance with a third-place finish in written exam and fourth in panel quiz.

The Pacific Region color guard team, made up of cadets from the California Wing’s Skyhawk Composite Squadron 47, placed first in the mile run; second in indoor practical, in-ranks inspection and written exam; third in standard drill and mile run; and fourth in outside practical.

The Northeast Region color guard team, consisting of cadets from the Rhode Island Wing’s West Bay Composite Squadron, finished third in the panel quiz; fourth in the standard drill, outdoor practical and exam; fifth in the indoor practical and in-ranks inspection; and eight in the mile run.

The Southwest Conference drill team finished first in three categories – in innovative drill, mil run and panel quiz – and added a third-place performance in volleyball, fifth place in written exam and sixth place in standard drill. Its members came from the Texas Wing’s Sheldon Cadet Squadron.

The Great Lakes Region drill team won the volleyball competition and placed second in written exam and mile run, third in standard drill and in-ranks inspection, fifth in innovative drill and sixth in panel quiz. Members came from four Ohio Wing units – the Columbus, Lorain County and Youngstown ARS composite squadrons and the Wright-Patterson Cadet Squadron.

The Southeast Region drill team finished first in standard drill, second in volleyball, third in innovative drill and mile run, fourth in written exam and panel quiz and sixth in in-ranks inspection. Six Tennessee Wing squadrons – the Lewis County, McGhee-Tyson, Oak Ridge and Tullahoma composite squadrons and the Music City and Williamson County cadet squadrons – contributed members to the team.

In all, 152 cadets representing 31 squadrons in 13 wings participated in the competition.

MAXWELL AIR FORCE BASE, Ala. – Highly skilled Civil Air Patrol cadets from across America gather in Dayton, Ohio, this week for the 2012 National Cadet Competition, a prestigious CAP inspection and drill event that originated in 1947.

Scheduled for June 20-24 at Wright State University in Dayton, the competition will be held in front of special guests that include senior Air Force personnel, elected representatives and corporate America.

“Civil Air Patrol’s best color guards and drill teams are front and center for the National Cadet Competition,” said CAP National Commander Maj. Gen. Chuck Carr. “This is a 65-year tradition, which has inspired generations of cadets to strive for excellence. It showcases CAP’s top cadets, who work year-round to get here. We look forward to this year’s competition.”

The 152 cadets competing in this year’s National Cadet Competition earned the right to attend by winning local, state and regional competitions. Each of CAP’s eight regions will be represented by a four-person color guard and a 12-person drill team.

MINNESOTA — The search for a Twin Cities area pilot and his plane in Northeastern Minnesota has entered its second week and now involves Civil Air Patrol aircrews from Minnesota, Wisconsin and Illinois. CAP pilots have already logged about 630 hours in the search for Michael Bratlie, a 67-year-old pilot from Lakesville, who was breaking in a new engine on his white twin-engine Piper PA-31 Navajo when he disappeared. Such missions are nothing new for CAP, as told in this story by Steve Kuchera in the Duluth News Tribune, which chronicles the search for Bratlie.
